Last few days

Last few days to visit Centrespace Gallery in Bristol to see the latest work by Steph Wooster and Liz Hewitt. Centrespace is set in an old Chocolate factory on a medieval lane, just off Corn Street in Bristol. We are exhibiting with five other artists who specialise in ceramics, 3d collagraph structures, screen print and painting.

Steph is showing 3 knitted jumpers which she has delicately reconstructed with the most intricate Swiss darning, plus has created a lovely film to show the delicate movement of these garments. 

Liz is showing her rust prints on fabric and paper, with added stitch, plus black & white dry point etchings and monoprints. 

It's a wonderful exhibition, in a beautiful space, and you have until 5pm on weds 2nd Dec in which to visit, we hope to see you there. 

Contrasting exhibitions

Over the last few weeks I have visited 3 exhibitions starting with the Kaffe exhibition at the American Museum in Bath and was overwhelmed by the use of colour and the theatrical setting of the exhibition. This is the sight which greets you as you enter the gallery, a riot of colour and pattern.

In complete contrast, a visit to Stroud and the Alice Fox exhibition, who had created a calm, tranquil space, which captured the beauty of the sea shore. Delicate marks, sensitive stitch, & floating strips of cloth.

Then  finally a visit to the Museum in the Park to see the work of Jilly Morris, Hilary Bower & Caroline Bartlett. Delicate marks made by stitch and / or graphite were captured by these artists using black, grey and white.  My personal favourite this piece by Jilly Morris, with the delicate lace like quality of the drilled paper in stark contrast with the strength of the black graphite surface next to the holes.

All resulting in a return to playing with mark marking and colour, so watch this space, as my experiments develop.

Rust Dyeing in Cornwall

I had great fun recently while on holiday in St Ives, experimenting with rust dyeing in the sea, on Godrevy Beach. I posted while in St Ives, about my beachcombing finds, along the beaches. Having found a bundle of rusty wire and the remains of a rusty chain, I decided to try wrapping them in strip cloth and immersing them in sea water. Here's a video we made showing how we did.

Lots of laughter as the bundles were nearly washed out to sea, and very strange looks from people as they walked past. Lots of fun, and only got soaked once. Results will follow.

St Ives beach combing

           

I've been beachcombing along the beautiful St Ives beaches and the photo above is the result of yesterday's finds, lots of lovely sea glass, blue & white china fragments, shells, interesting pebbles and a lovely bundle of rusty wire.

Some of these will all be added to a piece I'm stitching on rust dyed African strip cloth, recording my   along these beaches. 

 More stitching will be added later.
