Dendrites and Butterflies

Santiago Ramon y Cajal described dendrites in the brain (the short branched threadlike extensions of the nerve cells) as the ‘mysterious butterflies of the soul...... whose beating wings may one day reveal to us the secrets of the mind’.

Carla has interpreted this thought in stitch with thread, buttons and ... lace butterfiles.

Brunel Broderers

The Brunel Broderers are a group of artists based in the South West of England who work in a variety of textile media and methodologies.
The group has built up a following within the textile world in challenging expectations of a medium traditionally called 'embroidery'.
Today their work defies a neat title encompassing as it does a diverse range of approaches, methods and materials to create a series of ideas for thematic schemes and exhibitions.

The group meets on a regular basis, holding workshops and providing a network of support and a forum for discussion. All group members are involved in promoting textiles to a wider audience.
