weekend workshop

We've just had a lovely weekend workshop run by Steph in Liz's studio overlooking a colourful garden. It was quite challenging as on the Saturday morning we had to collaborate in pairs, without speaking at all, and create a piece relating to the head and movement, that both people could wear! There were some very funny moments! I started by thinking about the moving parts on a head and looked at ways to create opening paper eyes, a wrinkling nose and an opening mouth out of one of the papers Steph had brought.

On the Sunday Linda was ill so we couldn't work in pairs any more. Instead individually we responded to what had been made by others on the previous day. The different sorts of hats appealed to me so I made some samples using fabrics that Carolyn had brought - a pleated silk ruffle to trim a hat, an overlaying of dyed scrim on another fabric to reference straw hats and plaited cotton that was wound & stitched round and round as some straw hats are. Ideas being taken from an NT book on hats & bonnets from the Snowshill collection.

a visit to Bath

Five of our group having a cuppa before visiting 44AD. It was great to see the space as a group to start considering what work might go where.

Tiggy's Walk

My latest work, remembering my lovely Boxer Tiggy who died last Autumn. We used to walk through this field past the oak tree.

Continuing my exploration of organdie I am beginning to manipulate the surface by using the grain of the fabric to create movement and distort the surface.

There are some days when stitch can seem to restrict the creativity. Sometimes you just need to be bold and free, to allow the physicality of the fabric to speak for itself.
This morning the sky was blue and the sun shining, just the time for some"blue sky thinking".The beginning of a piece of work for the forecourt of the Silk Mill. Now about two metres by one; it will grow!

Liz is working on a series of pieces called"Glimpses".

Built spontaneously and quickly using combinations of paint, dye, stitch on organdie the work reflects glimpses of walks though woodland.

Contrast is explored through light/dark, opaque/transparent, painted/dyed, stitched/clear areas.

Observation, documentation and reflection lead to a series of painted and stitched textile works

V and A Visit

Not been on here lately but working hard!

Last week I saw the Diaghilev exhibition at the V&A, great experience full of colour and drama.

I recommend it, also the Raphael tapestries. One can really appreciate the colour, texture and warm tactile qualities of cloth. A once in a life time opportunity I think.

Work at the Gloucestershire Guild

Here are 2 of my pictures, one butterfly and one of ants. I saw woodants at the limestone pavement at Gaitsbarrow on holiday.Amazing moss and ferns - lots of inspiration!

BBs at Art Camp

Here is Paul Harper. The BB's have worked with Paul and Alias before, benefiting from contact with artists from different disciplines and outlooks.

On Saturday we were indeed lucky to have both Amy Houghton, who was until recently a BB and whose website is linked in our 'websites we follow' section, and Caroline Morris - see more about Caroline and her research by clicking on magpieseven

Our activity at Camp 0, which focussed on various ecological activites, was called 'shelter' and involved making do and mending various tents, awnings and tarps to make a 'quite large' structure.
This was hopefully to be used by the whole group as a meeting place. Meanwhile an intellectual slant to the proceedings was taken with the group having pre-read a fascinating paper by Isis Brook entitled 'Craft skills and their role in healing the world' (Plymouth College of Art)  
Paul also brought along an interesting book 'The Case for Working with Your Hands' by Matthew Crawford who presented a paper at the Crafts Council  ' Assemble' Conference last week as well as 'Art As Experience' by John Dewey. The grasses were inviting to work with..

We wove ourselves into the landscape and created a BB place within it to share..

The big tarpaulins were decorated with drawings of flowers and drawings of broderer stitches and, of course, a bit of BB humour!

 We were asked by Paul Harper of Alias to contribute to this event: 'a residential camping weekend of participatory and collaborative events, discussions, workshops and artworks about culture, change and the limits of global growth'.
