These are just about ready -  paper folded, silk scraps stitched and buttons sewn on.

Looking forward to seeing the cards back from the printers!
Must start to prepare the short Talk for Wednesday 19th August about preparing for the Exhibition and showing images of the BB's 'work in progress' towards it....

RWA Drawn Exhibtion

Sometimes some bravery and risk brings truly surprising and affirming results..
Drawn is the current juried Exhibition at the RWA
The following RWA text about the Exhibition inspired me to take a deep breath and just give it a try!
Drawn, continuing to raise the profile of drawing as both an autonomous discipline and an interdisciplinary tool. As a means of communication and navigation, drawing has taken on a universality and accessibility unlike any other medium. It is a building block of creativity, key to the visualisation and translation of ideas and practices, fundamental in making, doing, testing, designing, thinking, playing and living....
Submissions have been invited from artists who either draw or explore the concept of drawing in their work, including illustrators, videographers, sculptors, printers, embroiderers, typographers, animators and architects, presenting a multidisciplinary approach to this resurging medium.
I entered a triptych of drawings first shown at Musgrove Hospital as part of the BB Exhibition 'Mending My Ways' - about healing hands - and hand washing in hospitals.
Thank you to all the BB's whose encouragement and support gives such confidence and affirmation...
Huge congratulations to Julie Heaton - a new BB whose work is also on show and Julie has blogged about it here
The wonderful Drawing On is a real delight and inspiration - do go if you can - on till June 7th!

Dialogues

Mentioned in this post here Kay and I met in Chapel Arts Cafe in Bath
The sharing of work, discussing ideas, looking at threads - all make for rich dialogue.
This image represents that to me with my burnt orange thread lying in amongst Kay's work.
It's a precious thing about the BB's - this sharing...

A little experiment following on from this
More 'back of an envelope' quick drawings whilst watching the crows...
torn, stitched with silk selvedge in a 9 patch... I have more plans.
The joy of this is to try out ideas!

Walcot Chapel in Bath - a working studio week in May. Just exchanged an idea with Liz Hewitt about stitch vocabulary - one for a BB discussion some day? Looking forward to meeting up as a group for a days working together in August in Alison's garden. For more about Walcot see http://boostitch.wordpress.com

Tatting..

For the Broderers Exhibition at Bridport Arts Centre I showed a little film about making and meditation alongside the pieces of work.
And so, in thinking about developing both the film work and stitch work, I decided upon making a screen from hexagonal pieces in paper, organdie and organza with insertion stitches. Hopefully a beautiful screen on which to watch the gentle movement of light on fabric and create an intriguing surface on which to project the films themselves. Learning more about insertion stitches from the Broderers who generously share knowledge and skills, I also happened upon the craft of  needle tatting via a stitch friend and have experimented with a tatting edge.. We shall see - it will take time!

Linking ...

I thought I might carry on with the knit and crochet theme too to start this post!
Wrist warmer mittens have been a favourite in my family this winter

To have a look at more detail about these click on this January post at boostitch

At our last meeting at Liz Harding's home I also photographed some details of kantha stitch on a couple of beautiful cushions - inspiring!

My interest was caught as I had been teaching a workshop on kantha at Heartspace Studios
A little sample of various stitch patterns:

Frome Embroiderers Guild

On Saturday 12 October I went to Frome and District Embroiderers Guild as I had been asked to give a 'Talk' on the BB's. These Talks are an hour long with plenty of slides and an example of work from every member of the Group.
I had a bit of a panic the night before as I as lost the lead that connects my laptop to my projector and spent literally all evening searching for it! Having woken in the night making a plan for what we would do instead of a Talk (which I started to look forward to!), I was lucky and found it in time - and we set off for Frome (my partner drove me there and spent a wonderful time in the record shop Raves from the Grave buying vinyl!) Frome is a buzzy place with a monthly Artisan Market and tempting shops for textile lovers on St Catherine's Hill
The Brunel Broderers held an Exhibition called 'Curiouser and Curiouser..' at The Silk Mill Studios in 2011 (for details and plenty of posts, click on Curiouser in the labels section at the bottom of the page) - the Silk Mill Studios were nominated for an English Heritage Angel Award just recently and now have the top 2 floors occupied by artist studios.
The Talk followed interest by the Guild, many of whom came to Curiouser including a lovely visit from their Young Embroiderers Group.
Thank you for a warm and happy time and such enthusiasm for a future BB exhibition somewhere in Frome at some stage.
I can't do any further Talks till next year, but if you are interested do please get in touch with us as another member of the Group has just offered to give Talks about our work.

Last week at Bridport!

Strand - our BB Summer Show, is entering it's last week at Bridport Arts Centre! It finishes at 4pm next Saturday 14 September (closed Sunday and Monday), so do take a trip to the seaside later this week if you can - the Arts Centre, the town, the sea and countryside are SO inspiring and creative.
I have a film on show - and thought I would post a little series of clips to give a glimpse of it.
Do visit my blog too - boostitch.wordpress.com
